School Governance

                               GOVERNING BODY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

School governors are volunteers who want to make a positive contribution to children’s education.  The role of the governing body is strategic. The headteacher and staff manage the school on a day-to-day basis.  Individual governors have no power or responsibility. It is only the full governing body that has legal duties and powers. However, all governors share in that corporate responsibility.

The school's direction is agreed by the governing body, headteacher and senior leadership team, who also make sure that the school is meeting its targets.

The purpose of a maintained school governing body is to ‘conduct the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement at the school’.

The three core functions of a governing body are:

·         To set the strategic direction of the school

·         To hold the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils

·         To oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure that money is well spent

Plaistow and Kirdford Primary School’s governing body currently consists of 10 members, as follows:

·         1 Headteacher

·         1 Staff Governor

·         1 Local Authority Governor

·         2 Parent Governors

·         5 Co-opted Governors

The Full Governing Body meets 5 times a year and we have two committees (Resources and Teaching & Learning) made up of members of the governing body who meet half-termly.  The minutes from Full Governing Body meetings are available to view at school.
